Scotts of Helmsley has maintained the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Quality Award scheme, for the second year in a row.
This Quality Award Scheme is run by the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, and it is a way to raise standards within the fish and chip trade, as well as enhancing the profile of the industry.
The NFFF’s rewarded shops are the ones that provide good quality products, high standards of hygiene and high level of competence.
The process to become awarded involves an inspection carried out by the National Federation of Fish Friers, who assess the shop’s presentation, hygiene, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and the quality of the cooked product.
Last year, Scotts of Helmsley won an international sustainability recognition award due to it only serving fish from sustainable supplies, which saw it joining a select band of just 47 fish and chip shops in the country to carry the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council’s) Fisheries Standard.
Scotts is also renowned for its gluten-free dishes. And with real batter being key, its gluten free offerings are “proper, battered” fish and chips.
Tony Webster, owner of Scotts of Helmsley, said: “We are extremely pleased to maintain this prestigious award.
“To be recognized as one of the top fish and chip shops by the NFFF is, indeed, an honour and a credit to our hardworking staff, especially Chef Manager Shane White and Natalie Feilding who I would like to offer my sincere thanks for their continued hard work and efforts to maintain our excellent reputation.
“The award doesn’t just represent the fish and chips we produce, but also the hard work and high quality produce our local suppliers provide us to work with.”
Richard Wardell, NFFF Training and Accreditation Manager, said: “The Quality Award assessment is exhaustive.
“Food safety is a key area that we examine together with other key aspects of the business including the preparation and cooking equipment, to the management of paperwork and the traceability of fish.
“Scotts of Helmsley clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes from. Achieving the NFFF Fish & Chip Quality Award provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”
Competing with hundreds of high streets across the country, Helmsley is now named as Britain’s Best Market Town high street, where Scotts can be found with a large separate dining area which is a popular choice for walkers/ramblers and cyclists.
The shop is open seven days a week and has a menu with an increased number of homemade dishes.
